 "Good phone. Useful allrounder" 2009-08-10
By Adrian
I got this phone second hand about 2 months ago and it has been great. Works well and I cant live with a small screen anymore.

When it first came out, I wasnt that impressed with it due to its size and the fact that it was a Samsung. However, early this year I became aware of how good it's photos are, and it has far better video capabilities and a much larger screen size than my previous Motorola ZN5, which you can also read my review on, if you're interested.

Good things:

- great photos.

- easy to use.

- good video, though current phones have better cpapabilities now.

- 8 gb on board memory, yet can also inisert own memory card too.

- music player reasonably good. Has 3.5mm jack so can use own ear phones.

- large 2.8 inch screen.

- slider mechanism smooth.

- reasonable phone.

- useful calander.

- calculator. At first I thought it was quirky how it listed every number you type in to be added/multiplied etc. But turns out it's pretty darn useful. Every now and again when I add numbers from a list, I lose track of the number I added. Cant remember? No problem- just look at the list to see the numbers you've entered so far!

Not so Good:

- LCD screen is plastic. Makes it look and feel cheap. The ZN5 I mentionaed before feels like it is a much better constructed and durable phone than this.

- Viewing photos has limited options for editing and installing photos as wallpapers.

- Phone- listening to the other person seemed not quite as clear as my experience with other phones- Motorola ZN5, Sony Ericsson w902, k810i.

- Alarm. While you can set multiple alarms, it's doesnt allow customisation of the days you want. A bit limiting for me.

- Alarm is also a bit soft.

Really Bad:

- One odd incident. Usually the battery stays charged for a day or two. Suddenly after 6 weeks, the battery drained to almost zero in half a day. It was like this for 2 days. I was considering sending it to a service centre, when suddenly all was well again. It's been fine since. I looked this up online and some people have complained the battery drains very quickly. I have no idea why it happened but it's fine now.

Should you buy this phone?

If you wanta phone with a good camera, with a good sized screen, and a keypad which you can get your fingers around easily, running on Symbian 60, then sure, go ahead. It's not the latest tech, but it's good and functional, and sells second hand for almost half price compared to a year ago. It's also a darn sight cheaper than the Nokia 95, Nokia 95 8gb, and Nokia n96, which it are it's obvious competitors.

 "Over priced...for now" 2008-12-23
By F. Iacobelli (University Heights, Ohio United States)
By pure specifications, this is an excellent phone. But the price tag on Amazon is just absurd, given that it's essentially a Nokia N96 (minus the camera, I know I know) and that it comes with NO US WARRANTY. And lest we

forget, it's not US 3G compatible.

On a positive note, it records 30fps in VGA, much unlike the Sony Ericsson K850i or C905 which both record 30fps in QVGA, which is just plain grainy. It also has a TV out cable, which is great.

I have both a K850i and a Nokia N95, as well as an N80 (from a few years ago) and a Nokia N82. For the money, the N82 is just your best bet, with a 5mp camera, 30fps QVGA, tv out, and running the SAME OS as the innov8. That being said, I'd still take the innov8 over the new N96 given that they are similar in price...for now.

When Amazon brings the price down a few hundred dollars, then the phone will take off. But until then, it's simply not priced within its sweet spot.

 "Great camera phone!" 2008-12-09
By Gary H (CA USA)
I just upgraded my k750i to this phone, the Samsung innov8. It's a great camera phone and the pictures and videos are fantastic.

People complain the phone is a bit sluggish. It's alot faster than my Sony k750i! Web browsing via wifi is alot faster than the Iphone (i had this phone over a year doing development).

The optical mouse works great web browsing.

The phone has stereo speakers, two cameras (one in the front for video calls), and a great card reader program. The program takes a business card and enters it into your contact list. It works pretty good - just line up the biz card at the four corners of the virtual corners on the screen and it automagically snaps an image of it and does some cool ocr to get the contact info off the card.

The one thing I don't like about this phone compared to my sony is that if I have one contact that has multiple numbers, I cannot easily tell by looking at the logs which phone the caller used to call me. All I get is the name of the person and an icon (with the sony, there are three icons: mobile, home, business, and others).

The other great feature of the phone is that it uses a standard 3.5mm jack!

Update: I've been using it for over a week and it's great! The pictures and videos are excellent, but sometimes you see the videos pause (as it's trying to catch up). I used the voice recorder to record one of the iphone tech talks and it had no problems recording over an hour.

If you're using it constantly throughout the day (and I mean heavy usage), only expect a day of battery life. My normal usage is about two days... I'm using wifi and bluetooth alot.

UPDATE 12/28: So I've been using it for a few weeks now. There seems to be issues with the phone displaying names associated with numbers. If my dad calls, I get the phone number instead of "DAD". When people call, you sometimes cannot tell who it is because you're expecting "John Smith" instead of 4081234567. Sometimes it works, sometimes NOT. I don't recognize half the number that come up because I just don't memorize phone numbers anymore. Also, the phone will hang sometimes. I'm sure a firmware update will fix these early production innov8's.

I ran out of charge so I put my sim back into my Sony K750i. That phone is so small and it is a bit easier to navigate and it always associate names with the caller id. I kinda miss the K750i, but the innov8 is so much better in terms of browsing (esp via wifi), pictures, and videos. Voice quality is also excellent.

Other than that, I still love the innov8, but it needs a bit of polishing and refinement.

Gary
